Overview
Philisha Adkins-Lewis’ students conducted an experiment by challenging classrooms to turn off their overhead fluorescent lights and use table lamps for one period a day over the course of four months. Aside from creating a dim light area, which helps students relax and study better, the school reduced its energy usage by 3%! The students asked, “How much more impact could we have if we installed low-light areas in every classroom and used energy-saving light bulbs?” They applied for an Eco-Audit Grant of $840 to buy energy-saving lamps for classrooms that don’t have any and expect to help decrease their school’s energy bill by 8–20% per year.
